Caring For Porcelain Veneers

As a cosmetic dentist in Southend one of most popular treatments is porcelain veneers. Ultra thin shells of porcelain are bonded to the front surface of the teeth and can be used to treat a variety of dental problems, including

  • porcelain veneersTeeth that are cracked or chipped
  • Stained teeth
  • Teeth that are gapped
  • Slightly misaligned teeth

They can also be used as a permanent alternative to teeth whitening and can often be used for teeth straightening in Southend in place of a brace.

The benefits of porcelain veneers are plentiful. They look extremely natural and can be blended in with surrounding teeth for a seamless finish, and they’re also stain resistant. They don’t irritate the gums, and they can last for up to 10 years. Having said all of this, our patients still have plenty of questions to ask about veneers such as: Do they require special care? Do they break easily? Do I have to avoid eating certain foods?

The answer on the whole is ‘no’ but there are a few things to note.

Caring for porcelain veneers

Porcelain veneers really don’t require any special care and as such we would recommend that you follow the same good oral habits as for the remainder of your teeth, namely brushing twice a day and flossing once a day. It is recommended, however, that you brush your veneers with a toothpaste that is non-abrasive.

Although caring for veneers at home is easy you’ll have to visit your dentist in Southend a week following the placement of your veneers to check that they’ve been accepted by your mouth. Other appointments going forward may be necessary to polish the veneers from time to time and for your dentist to check on other things. For example if it’s found that you grind your teeth at night, you may be fitted with a mouthguard to prevent damaging your veneers. You may also be recommended to refrain from eating foods which are particularly hard or crunchy to minimise the risk of breaking your veneers.

So, as you can see porcelain veneers are a low risk dental treatment which offer great rewards. Not only do they look fantastic but they can correct a number of dental issues. There’s very little care needed to maintain their good looks and they have the potential to last for up to 10 years.
