Did You Know You Can See a Hygienist Without Seeing a Dentist?
Most people when they come to visit us will book an appointment to see our dentist in Clacton as well as a hygiene appointment. It makes perfect sense as it’s a quick and effective way to maintain a good preventative dental care regime that will typically only take an hour or so of your time every six months. However did you know that you don’t need to see a dentist in order to see a hygienist? Although we certainly don’t recommend skipping your regular check-ups, if you wish to have a hygiene treatment at any time then you can simply give us a call to book one.
Another good thing about being able to do this, is that it can be quite a nice way for a nervous patient or for someone who hasn’t seen a Clacton dentist for quite some time to begin gradually easing themselves back into regular dental care. Treatment is very gentle and non-invasive and you will find here at Clacton Dental Care that we are all very easy to talk to and are extremely sympathetic towards nervous patients.
What Is the Purpose of a Hygiene Treatment?
Plaque can soon harden into tartar as this is a process that only takes a couple of days which is why regular brushing and flossing is so important. The purpose of a hygiene treatment is to remove tartar from your tooth surfaces; it can only be scraped or scaled away by a dental professional as it is too hard to be removed through regular brushing and flossing. Tartar can build up in areas regularly missed by a toothbrush, normally right at the gum line and in between your teeth. When tartar builds up on your teeth, the bacteria in tartar produce toxins that inflame your gums, greatly increasing your risk of gum disease. By having tartar regularly removed from your teeth during your hygiene appointments, we can help reduce your risk of gum disease. It’s a great preventative treatment.
This isn’t the only thing that your hygienist can do for you, as they can identify areas you might be regularly missing out during brushing and flossing and can help you improve your brushing technique. Do you struggle to floss properly? Ask us for help as our hygienist can give you lots of tips and practical advice and can show you how to use alternative tools such as interdental brushes. These are tiny Christmas tree shaped brushes that fit in between your teeth and they can be much easier to use than dental floss. If you have any bridgework or dental implants or other dental appliances, our hygienist can also show you how to thoroughly clean around these, keeping your mouth fresh and clean.
During your hygiene treatment your teeth will be scaled and polished which helps to remove some surface stains. It’s a really nice treatment for just quickly brightening up your smile and course it’s always good to know that you are looking after your teeth and gums by seeing a hygienist. Our hygienist works closely with our dentist in Clacton and if they spot any dental problems then they may recommend you book a visit.
