Crowns
We use a crown when you’ve broken a tooth. This might happen because of trauma, or weakening by decay or because of a very large filling.
The crown fits over the remaining part of a prepared tooth- like a cap, making it strong and giving it the shape of a natural tooth. It will also be the same colour as your teeth, giving the restoration a more natural appearance so it fits in with the rest of your teeth.
We might recommend a crown as a good solution for discoloured fillings to improve the aesthetic look. If you have had a root canal treatment you will need a crown to protect or cap the restored tooth, allowing you to eat and bite down on it as if it was a real tooth. Crowns are also used to anchor a bridge or denture firmly in place in the mouth.
If a crown was fitted over 10 years ago, some patients may start to see a dark line between the crown and gum. There is nothing wrong with the crown when this happens, but some patients wish to replace the crown to give them more confidence in their smile.
If you would like to replace your old crowns, please book in to see one of our experienced team and we would be very happy to advise you.
Bridges
For some people, a bridge is a traditional, safe and reliable solution. Our team will advise on whether it is something that will help you.
We recommend a bridge as a fixed solution to a missing tooth or teeth. Bridges are made of a precious metal base that gives them a solid structure and makes them extremely hard-wearing.
We securely bond the bridge to your natural teeth and then place a crown in the gap. A bridge helps to strengthen the teeth and makes chewing and eating easier because they are fixed in place.
Some bridges can also be fixed to your jaw with dental implants, if you have several teeth next to each other that are missing. This is a stronger solution to support multiple missing teeth.
Once you have a bridge fitted, you will have to take extra care of your daily hygiene regime to ensure it stays plaque free and prevent bad breath. Our team of experts will advise on how best to ensure your overall dental health and hygiene.
