Benefits of Regular Dental Hygiene Visits

Regular visits to your hygienist will help identify any potential oral health issues at an early stage before they result in discomfort or require potentially costly treatment.

Removal of plaque and tartar build-up helps prevent the release of acids that are harmful to your teeth and gums. Brushing alone is inadequate in removing the build-up of dental plaque and tartar. Within approximately 72 hours any unremoved plaque will harden into tartar, which cannot be removed with a toothbrush, but can be effectively tackled by your hygienist.

Protection Against Gum Disease

NHS data suggests that 50% of those over the age of 35 suffer from some degree of gum disease. Gum disease is reversible in its early stages, however, if left unchecked it can progress and ultimately lead to pain, bad breath and tooth loss. Your hygienist can help safeguard your gums by removing harmful bacteria from below the gum line and get your oral health back on track.

Elimination of Stubborn Stains

Certain foods, drinks and medications, as well as smoking, can result in stained teeth. These stubborn stains can be removed using the AIR-FLOW system, a combination of water, compressed air and fine powder particles that quickly and comfortably clean and polish teeth, even those areas that are difficult to access. This fast, comfortable method of teeth cleaning is suitable for most patients, including those with sensitive teeth, implants, bridges, veneers and crowns. So you can show off your clean smile in no time.

Dental Care Education

Most people brush their teeth but many do not do so correctly which can lead to oral health concerns and ultimately gum disease. Your hygienist is able to teach you the correct cleaning technique, as well as the type of brush and dental floss you should use for optimum dental care at home, to ensure you continue to support your health while in your own bathroom.

Supporting Fresh Smelling Breath

Bacteria hiding below the gum line is a common cause of bad breath. Toothbrushes alone cannot reach below the gum line, but your dental hygienist is fully equipped to remove harmful bacteria and help keep your breath smelling fresh by completing a deep clean.

Detection of Oral Cancer

Your hygienist is able to detect the early signs of oral cancer. Oral cancer is highly curable if treated early. Your hygienist will offer you advice on the risk factors of oral cancer and how you can reduce them. You will be more at risk of oral cancer if you are a smoker, drink excessive amounts of alcohol, or are infected with the HPV virus.

Confidence Boosting

Knowing your mouth is fresh, clean and healthy gives you the confidence that comes from knowing that your smile is bright, sparkling and healthy.

Ensuring you keep up good oral health practices can often eliminate gum disease and decay, much like excerising to keep up bodily health, your hygienist can recommend a personalised plan to keep your teeth and gums in tip top condition.

If you are worried about a hygiene treatment why not listen to Julie’s story about her treatment as she was incredibly nervous, but our team made her feel reassured and boosted her confidence.

Airpolish

This is a simple treatment that is much-loved by many of our patients. Straight-forward and refreshing airflow polishing is a hygiene treatment that effectively removes stains on the front and back of teeth. The procedure works by using a fine jet of compressed air, water and fine powder particles to remove staining caused by coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco and some mouthwashes.

You can just come in and have this treatment done – we’d love to see you for a clean and polish before a big event or just to help you look and feel great.

Are you prone to teeth grinding or clenching? You are not alone! Our number two trend for 2021 is Bruxism.

Patients presenting with Bruxism; more commonly known as teeth grinding and clenching have doubled in 2020. Unfortunately, we expect to see the knock-on effects of this perpetuate throughout 2021 as our levels of stress remain high. Bruxism has two different forms: Grinding and clenching. Grinding is when you move the upper and lower set of teeth against each other. Clenching is when you tightly grip teeth together, but there is no movement – its static and you often can’t hear it. Grinding wears down the teeth and will leave tell-tale wear and tear which will be visible to the dentist. You may also be able to hear the faint sound of someone grinding their teeth. Clenching could cause damage to teeth but may manifest more as muscle pain and headaches. In more extreme cases this can lead to problems with the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) or the facial muscles that can be painful and limit the ability to open the mouth during flare ups.

Go and see your dentist if you think you might have Bruxism, they can help!

Together Dental

Together Dental is made up of a dedicated team with a shared vision and values. Our people are incredibly skilled, and have spent so many years training and sharing their knowledge. At the same time we all recognise that the local community is at the very heart of every dental practice, and that we should always remain a valued community resource.

We want to introduce you to some of the wonderful people who make our team great and here about their career journeys. Meet Dr Aditi Patel:

Aditi grew up Eastbourne, Sussex and has been part of the Together Dental for 14 years. She trained at Barts and Royal London University and is a Member of Royal College of Surgeons. She has taught overseas dentists to qualify for their ORE examinations. She was a Senior House Officer at Barts and the Royal London hospital in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery where she experienced facial trauma surgery, head, neck and oral surgery and also became skilful in complexities of dental extractions. Following this Aditi spent a year here as a senior house officer in Restorative dentistry furthering her skills in this field.

She says; “I have been lucky enough to have a fantastic career already working in dental academia. I love restorative dentistry and have worked with complex extractions of curved roots and other very difficult cases. It is all great experience because when I come to manage really complex conditions then everything in day to day practice seems so much easier!”

“I have trained under, and worked with some of the most renowned, experienced consultant dental surgeons in the UK. I reached a point where I wanted to come back into general practice to build stronger and more-long term relationships with my patients and offer my skills back to people in the community. I’m a people person and always liked the practice setting and because of my experience I can give my patients the very best clinical and academic information.”

“I made such a right decision choosing Together Dental. Since then they have just been so lovely. Sanjay and Mayur made things so smooth in any transitions and practice upgrades that we have gone through. It’s a testament to their ethical values and ways of working that we have such a supportive and constructive atmosphere throughout.”

“In every meeting that I have with Mayur (Clinical Director) he always tells me something new and interesting. They are always looking forward, it’s always positive, and I have always felt very much supported throughout my time here.”

“You don’t always get business owners like that really. I feel like they are my dental family. Even though I may not speak to them all of the time I know that they are there, which is very important in dentistry.”

“As a dentist we do have to keep up to date. Together Dental provide me with basic things like CPR and webinars, through to further training, they are proactive in looking for great new up to date education and furthering our skills which is great for the dental team.”

“Because I have been in my practice for a long time, I feel I have created rapport and trust organically with my patients during this time. This has meant that many more attend regularly and so they become dentally fit. It’s lovely to have dentists that stay for a long time. Patients like the continuity and it’s better for their dental health.”

“If I wasn’t a dentist, I would work in something creative or be an artist. Being a dentist is a fantastic career because it’s a healing profession. Pain is the worst thing a person can have so to heal and get people out of pain is a spiritual gift and important to me. Being a dentist is scientific but also a form of art too.”

“In this profession you have control over your career and progression. I feel like I high achieved a lot and have surpassed many of my male contemporaries. For younger dentists they are going to get a lot of support, make a lot of dental colleagues that become friends to take forward throughout life which is nice. They will also be in a great atmosphere to progress their dental career. I often give advice to more junior dentists. We are all here to help each other.”
